Sixers announce 'Tank' Night for March 17

Philadelphia--The Sixers announced the latest addition to the 2015-16 promotional schedule at the Wells Fargo Center will take place on March 17, versus the Washington Wizards. No, not green backboards or green rims to celebrate St Patrick's Day. Rather, to mark the 32nd anniversary of the release of the critically acclaimed film Tank, the Sixes will hold "Tank Night." On March 16, 1984, Tank hit the big screen featuring stars: James Garner, C. Thomas Howell, Jenilee Harrison, Shirley Jones, G. D. Spradlin, and James Cromwell, to name a few. The film received thirty-seven Oscar nominations, and took home thirty-six statues. All fans ages fifteen and over will receive a C. Thomas Howell 76ers jersey. The actor will take part in the ceremonial jump ball to begin the game by tossing the ball from the turret of a 1944 Sherman tank at center court. At halftime, 600 lucky fans will have the chance to help pull the 30-ton, WWII relic the length of the court via steel cable. The team also announced that to "fire up the crowd" during the game, the Jumbotron will show the movie clip with C. Thomas Howell saying. "He's my dad, and I love him. And if anyone tries to hurt him...I will blow them away." ("Sixers" will be dubbed over "dad.") Jenilee Harrison and Jennifer Garner--no relation to James--will launch "Sixers Tanking" t-shirts into the crowd throughout the first and third quarters.

Brooklyn--Move over Nets. Watch your step Islanders. A few new housemates are moving in. The brand new Barclays Center is apparently the place to be these days in the metropolitan New York sporting world.

Several months ago, the Islanders announced they would move from Nassau County to Brooklyn beginning in 2015. The team was unable to secure a new, much-needed facility on the Island. (Technically, Brooklyn is on the western tip of Long Island, so...)

Yesterday, the Devils, Rangers, and Knicks all announced plans to move from their current home arenas to Flatbush Avenue and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, New York City's most populous borough with 2.5 million people (roughly the same size as Chicago).

The Devils move from Newark may be the most surprising of the three teams given that the Prudential Center, the team's home stadium, was completed only in 2007. The Prudential Center was meant to keep the team in New Jersey for "a friggin' longtime."

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie called the Devils' move "cowardly," but added that his focus was still on Superstorm Sandy recovery. Christie said that once Sandy work was complete he would attempt to lure the Phoenix Coyotes to North Jersey.

NBA saves Winter Classic: Raptors to play Pistons outdoors at Michigan Stadium on New Year's Day

Detroit, MI--The two cities originally slated for the NHL's cancelled January 1st Winter Classic, Toronto and Detroit, will now have their respective NBA teams, the Raptors and Pistons, attempt to play an outdoor basketball game in front of more than 100,000 fans at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. NBA commissioner David Stern denies the move is "kicking hockey when it's down," but instead argues the game is giving NHL fans a chance to "become better NBA fans and leave hockey for good." Because of legal reasons, the NBA cannot refer to the match up as the Winter Classic, but, after careful research and market testing, has decided to name the spectacle the Cold Weather Classic. (The other name finalist: The Colder Season Between Fall and Spring Classic.) The Pistons and Raptors have a combined eleven wins this season, but holding the game between two bad teams outside, in possible snow and wind, is expected to sell plenty of tickets.

Report: Los Angeles Kings credit Sacramento Kings for Stanley Cup win

When the Los Angles Kings captured their first championship in the franchise's 45-year history on Monday night, the city of nearly four million people gave a hearty sigh. Well, at least the five hundred thousand or so southern Californians that care about hockey. This support from the surfing community was much appreciated by the Kings. However, it was a professional basketball team in the state's capital, some 400 miles to the north, that gave the team its edge over the New Jersey Devils.

"Honestly, we couldn't have done it without the support of the Sacramento Kings," said Los Angeles Kings forward Mike Richards, who joined the team last summer through a trade. "They sent us inspiring texts messages and even came to a few playoff games. There's a special bond between two pro teams that share the same name in different sports. Like, for example, the San Francisco Giants pulling for the New York Giants in the Super Bowl in February.And, the New York Giants cheering for the San Francisco Giants to win the World Series in 2010. There's really nothing like it. We owe a lot to them."

Richards makes a great point. How quickly we forget how the Giants unbridled support of the Giants captivated the nation only five short months ago. Eli Manning called the S.F. Giants backing "stronger than the Golden Gate Bridge."

And, here it is again. The Sacramento Kings were invited by the Cup winners to participate in the championship parade on Thursday. "We thought we would be mixed in with the Kings on multiple buses," said Marcus Thornton, the club's leading scorer this season. "Never in a million years did we think we would have our own bus ... at the front of the parade."

"There has long been a perceived divide between northern California and Southern California," explained a teary-eyed owner Philip Anschutz to NBC hockey analyst Darren Pang in the Kings' locker room following the game six victory. "Some have gone as far to suggest that the state be divided into two. Well, I'm here to tell you the northern part of the state and the southern part of the state became unified over the last couple months. The Kings and the Kings came together. It's a special, special thing, Darren."

When Pang asked Anshutz if the entire Sacramento roster would be outfitted with championship rings the politically conservative owner smiled nervously and replied, "Abso-f-ing-lutely!" Additionally, the Sacramento Kings will all have their names engraved onto the Cup.

New York--Swedish-born actor Stellan Skarsgård who has appeared in countless Hollywood films over his long career, has officially signed on to the cast of the Jeremy Lin movie due out in mid spring. Skarsgård will play Dr. Devlin Eklund, a Harvard English professor that, according to questionable sources, convinced Lin to join the basketball team after seeing the prolific student throw a piece of paper into a trash bin from the back of a classroom. "It will be a lot like my role in Good Will Hunting," explained Skarsgård, referring to the 1997 Matt Damon film. "Instead of M.I.T., I'm now at Harvard dealing with letters instead of numbers, and I see this kid, one of my students, make an amazing 'shot' into the waste paper basket. Right then and there I know this kid will go to the NBA someday." Skarsgård is joining Robin Williams, who signed last week to play Lin's mentor, and Ben Affleck, who will play Jeremy Lin. Lin has disassociated himself from the project saying, "That's not at all how the story went down." Legal issues may force multiple changes to the film: Jeramee Lynn, Haverford College (PA), New York Nicks, and, possibly, A.B.A. instead of N.B.A.
